Pearls Before Breakfast
Joshua Bell, one of the most talented violinists in the world, played a part in a social experiment conducted by the Washington Post several years ago.
When Bell was asked if he'd be willing to don street clothes and perform at rush hour, he said:
"Uh, a stunt?"
Well, yes. A stunt. Would he think it . . . unseemly?
Bell drained his cup.
"Sounds like fun," he said.
Essentially, they had him play a $3.5million violin for 45mins at a metro station in Washington DC. Several days prior, he performed in a sold-out Boston theater, with tickets averaging $100. Turns out, only 6 people stopped to listen. He collected about $32, from 20 different people.
I stumbled upon this article and linked to it, because I feel as a society, we're missing out on amazing things. Sometimes we need to take a step back from all that hustling and just savour and enjoy what's around us.
